Spicy British-Style Lasagne

Ingredients

  • 1 arrabiatta sauce
  • 8 oz oven ready lasagne sheets
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 pt milk
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 oz butter
  • 2 oz all-purpose flour
  • 4 oz cheese, shredded
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch pepper

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease a square or rectangular oven proof dish.

Make the white sauce:
1. Heat the milk with the bay leaf in a saucepan until it is not quite at boiling point. Remove from the heat and let stand for 10 minutes. Remove the bay leaf.
2. Melt the butter in a heavy saucepan. Sprinkle in the flour and cook for 1 minute over a gentle heat, stirring constantly.
3. Remove the pan from the heat and gradually stir in the milk. Return the pan to the heat, stir until thick and smooth, and season with salt and pepper.

Make the meat sauce:
1. Brown the ground beef in a skillet. Add the jar of arrabiatta sauce and simmer gently for about 10 minutes.

Construct the lasagne:
1. Arrange a layer of lasagne sheets over the base of the dish. Spoon over half of the meat sauce. Drizzle with 5 tablespoons of the sauce.
2. Repeat the layers, ending with a layer of lasagne sheets.
3. Add the cheddar cheese to the remaining sauce. Spread over the top, covering the surface completely. Sprinkle with the parmesan cheese.
4. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden.
